Privacy policy
Your purposes. Your device.
Records stored on your device
What For? stores selected-app tokens, app display information supplied by Apple, written purposes, notes, session times, reflections, history and settings in local storage shared with its app extensions. Written purposes, notes, selected-app names and tokens are not sent to Firebase or attached to advertising requests.
The app does not read posts, videos, searches, messages or other content inside selected apps. No account is required. It does not request your contacts, photos or precise location.
Usage analytics and crash reports
The main app uses Google Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics to understand setup, feature usage, permissions, ad delivery and failures. Events can include app and device information, pseudonymous identifiers, timestamps, selected duration, purpose categories, counts and error states. These events are distinct from your written purposes, private notes and local history records.
You can turn analytics and crash collection off in What For? Settings. Disabling collection stops future collection; it does not automatically delete data previously received by Google. Diagnostic information may remain locally queued. See Firebase privacy and security for provider details.
Ads and consent
The main app uses Google AdMob and User Messaging Platform. The first guided session is ad-free. Later unlocks use rewarded ads; other main-app screens can show native or interstitial ads. No ads are shown in Screen Time extensions, widgets or notifications.
AdMob may process device identifiers, advertising and interaction data, diagnostics and approximate location derived from an IP address for ad delivery, measurement, fraud prevention and consent management. Non-personalized ads still require some data processing. Review available ad privacy choices in the app. What For? does not use IDFA for tracking across other companies’ apps and websites.
See Google’s privacy policy and Google’s advertising data information.
Apple permissions
Screen Time permission allows restrictions, temporary unlocks and re-restrictions for apps you select. Notification permission supports returning from the restriction screen, time reminders and reflections. Permissions can be changed in iOS Settings. Apple’s privacy policies and system behavior also apply.
Retention and deletion
Local history is kept for the latest 90 days and older records are cleaned during app use. Settings and selected apps remain until removed. Use the delete-all-history-and-settings option to remove local records and their recovery copy. Removing local data does not itself delete analytics or advertising data already held by Google. Contact the operator with questions about previously transmitted data.
Scope and changes
What For? is a personal phone-habit tool, not a parental-monitoring or medical service. Material changes to data handling will be described in the app or on this site with an updated date.
